Little Choices Make Big Results

May-15-2011 By admin

Little Choices.  Big Results.

What choices am I making today?

Pause.  Think about it and let it roll around in your consciousness.  Do I drink a glass of water first thing in the morning?  Do I stretch before getting out bed?  Do I eat protein for breakfast?  Do I put my keys in the same place so I don’t run around like a maniac in the morning trying to find them?

Little daily choices add up to produce big positive results.

Because our lives consist of many little daily choices, we often don’t notice the effect.  Drinking an extra cup of coffee a day and one less glass of water a day can lead to dehydration – not immediately but over time.  Having a muffin or bagel each morning for breakfast can result in an extra ten pounds of fat per year.  The daily choices don’t often seem significant because we don’t project them into the future.  They are small.  They seemingly can’t either hurt or help us.  Little choices are cumulative, not dramatic. Their impact, however, can be life-changing.

We often think that we don’t have time to do things to become healthy.  “I’d like to exercise, but I don’t have the time.” is a very common thing that I hear from my patients.  “My schedule is so hectic, I just don’t have time for breakfast.”  “Go to the gym?  I’m too tired for that.  I’d rather just collapse when I get home and watch The Real Househusbands of Fresno.”

Every day we make a huge number of little choices.  We do, however, erroneously believe that we have to make a big change or a big time commitment in order to get healthy or to become more successful.  It really doesn’t have to be something dramatic or earth-shaking.  For example, with respect to exercise, a series of a few short 10-minute walks can add up to a full hour of walking per day.  In like manner, brushing your teeth twice a day eventually leads to long-term dental health and daily flossing can increase your lifespan an extra 2-3 years!  Little choices with big results.

Bottom line.  If you start one or two little health or mindset choices and stay with it, you will see long-term positive effects.  Focus your Energy on what you want.  Break it down into little daily choices.  Enjoy the results! :)

Never underestimate the healing power of laughter. Endorphins are your body’s natural drugs. Just saw “The Hangover” DVD and I am feeling much better about life in general. :D

Stay Wild!

Omega 3 fatty acids are best found in wild caught fish, NOT the farm-raised. Farm-raised contain way too much Omega 6 EFAs. Stay with WILD!

Drink More Water! :)

Mar-31-2010 By admin

Never underestimate the power of water.  Many aches and pains that people feel are often the result of dehydration.  A general rule of thumb is to take the number of pounds that you weigh and divide by two to determine the number of ounces of water to consume per day (e.g. If I weigh 160 lbs., then I should drink 80 ounces of water or TEN 8 oz. glasses.  Not really that hard to do).  Drink more water!

Hi, there!

Well, today was my first trial run of practicing on a couple of paitents while only using one arm.  You see, I had left shoulder surgery on September 25th to reattach posterior cartilage that had ripped off the back of that joint.  Ouch!  Well, the good news is that despite having to wear a sling until October 26th, I am semi-funcitonal.  I can drive, feed myself, and even dress myself without any assistance. :-)   Adjusting a patient was the last obstacle to my return to limited work in Rockville and Alexandria.

I just shot and edited two videos yesterday and uploaded them to YouTube on “Nutrition and Surgery.”  They are short but you get the added bonus of getting to see me sporting a very fashionable sling. :-)

Looking forward to seeing my many patients in Maryland and Virginia this week.  However, please be gentle.  I’m not yet fully-recovered.

Yours in ever-increasing health and Energy,

Dr. V.
